Diseases of poverty
Advanced drug delivery systems are particularly needed in the developing world, where diseases of poverty proliferate and afflicted local populations have specific needs not served by the supply of drugs alone into inconsistent healthcare systems often lacking adequate personnel. Diseases of poverty in the developing world also typically do not provide the market incentive needed to motivate standard commercial development of new drugs.
For instance, the last TB drug was in 1963... more than 45 years ago, and consequently the disease is flourishing in both old and new drug-resistant forms.
Advanced drug delivery systems are essential to make the most of existing drugsg and vaccines by simplifying administration, shortening treatment duration, lowering side effects, and improving efficacy through better targeting. Mend is the only NGO dedicated to the development of advanced drug deliveryt systems for the countries of the developing world.
Mend aims to meet this challenge by working synergistically with other global efforts.
