Ceftin (Cefuroxime)

Overview

cefuroxime-axetilCeftin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria discovered by the Glaxo, now GlaxoSmithKline(gsk). Ceftin generic name is cefuroxime axetil and it’s used in the treatment of several infections. Ceftin antibiotic was originally derived from the fungus Cephalosporium acremonium and Cefuroxime belongs to the second generation group of cephalosporin antibiotics. The oldest member of this group is the cephalosporin obtained by Guy GF Newton and Edward Penley Abraham in 1955 from the fungus Cephalosporium acremoniumin pure form. In the following years, many more potent derivatives of cephalosporin were prepared which came onto the market from the mid-1960s, although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved cefuroxime in October 1983, after its discovery by Glaxo. There are several of Ceftin generics available today with different brand names.

How it works

Ceftin work by inhibiting an enzyme in bacteria required for the cell wall synthesis. As a result, the cell wall is damaged and the cell swells due to water flow in to the cell resulting to bacteria cell death. Therefore, Ceftin has a bactericidal effect. The antibiotic ceftin may be administered orally or by injection and the oral pill is in tablets and in suspension. During the bactericidal action of Ceftin, the active ingredient is not degraded, but it’s quickly resigned in antibacterial active form and removed from the body through the kidneys.

Ceftin uses

Ceftin antibiotic is used to treat infections such as bronchitis, gonorrhea, Lyme disease and infections of the skin, ears, sinuses, throat, tonsils, and urinary tract. Treatments for colds, flu, or other viral infections are outside Ceftin uses and not recommended for such. Also note that using antibiotic Ceftin when it is not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
