Flovent® (fluticasone)

What is Flovent?

Flovent is a corticosteroid used for inhibiting release of certain chemicals in the body which cause inflammation. With ‘Fluticasone’ as its core ingredient, it is used to prevent asthma attacks and other respiratory difficulties by reducing swelling and inflammation in lung areas. It must be noted that Flovent is not used for an acute asthma attack that has already started.Flovent is used for some other health-related issues which may or may not be listed in this guide.

Important information

Flovent is not good for treating asthma attack that has already started. Tell your doctor if you have been unwell or suffered any kind of infection before using Flovent. In case you asthma symptoms do not improve for more than 2 weeks, consult your medical practitioner immediately.If none of your asthma medications are helpful in improving your medical condition, visit your doctor. It may be an early sign of an acute asthma attack if you are in need of increased medication. Seek medical intervention if you have measured your asthma severity with peak flow meter and the numbers are above normal.Dosage of Flovent needs to be altered if you undergone a surgery, have been ill, remained under-stress or survived an asthma attack recently. Approach a doctor if your asthma medications are not proving helpful in treating or preventing asthma.If you have switched to Flovent from an oral medication, you may be required to get back to your previous medication in case you are stressed, suffered an asthma attack or any other emergency. Keep hold of an identification card or wear a medical alert ID in order to let others know when you are in need of an oral steroid.

Before using Flovent

Use of Flovent must be shunned if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, especially Fluticasone. . You may be required to recover completely for using Flovent.FDA pregnancy category C: It is unclear whether Flovent harms a fetus. Consult your doctor if your child is not growing normally while using Flovent.Steroids use for long-term may result in Osteoporosis, a bone disease. Flovent Side Effects

Severe side effects of Flovent are:

  • Muscle weakness. Tiredness;

  • Serious tingling, numbness, pain, muscle fatigue
  • Blurred vision, seeing halos around lights or eye pain
  • Wheezing or breathing disorders;
  • Fever, sore throat, ear pain, chills, flu symptoms
  • Worsening asthma symptoms

Some common malaises are:

  • Dryness in mouth, nose or throat
  • White patches in mouth or on lips
  • Headache, stuffy nose, sinus pain, cough;
  • Hoarseness in voice

What other drugs will affect Flovent HFA?

Flovent can react with many medications resulting in aggravation of side effects or serious health condition. Inform your specialist about all medications you use before using this medication.Flovent may interact with:

  • An antidepressant such as nefazodone
  • imatinib (Gleevec);
  • isoniazid (for treating tuberculosis);
  • conivaptan (Vaprisol);
  • Antibiotic such as clarithromycin (Biaxin), telithromycin (Ketek) or erythromycin (E.E.S., EryPed, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin, Pediazole);
  • Anti-fungal medications such as ketoconazole (Nizoral), miconazole (Oravig), voriconazole (Vfend) or itraconazole (Sporanox);
  • Heart or blood pressure medications such as verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan), diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor, Tiazac), nicardipine (Cardene) or quinidine (Quin-G);
  • HIV / AIDS medications such as nelfinavir (Viracept), saquinavir (Invirase),atazanavir (Reyataz), indinavir (Crixivan), fosamprenavir (Lexiva) or ritonavir (Norvir, Kaletra).

Note: This is not a comprehensive list and other drugs can also react to Flovent. Inform about all your medications to your specialist. This includes prescribed and over-the-counter drugs, health or dietary supplements and Ayurvedic or herbal products. While on Flovent, don’t start a new medication without your doctor’s guidance.

What happens if I miss a dose?

In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as you recall this lapse. If it is time for your next scheduled intake, shun taking your skipped dose. Do not consume the medication in large amounts for replenishing missed dose. It may lead to harmful results.

What happens if I overdose?

Strive to medical attention instantly or call poison help centre at 1-800-222-1222 Flovent overdose does not leave any harmful effects but long term use of steroids can result in development of symptoms like easy bruising, skin thinning and bleeding, increased acne or facial hair, change in shape or location of body fat, especially in your face, back, neck and waste, menstrual disorder, decreased libido and impotency

What should I avoid?

Do not come near to individuals having infections. Ask your doctor for some preventive measures in case you are exposed to measles or chickenpox. Such conditions can be detrimental for people using Flovent

How should I use Flovent?

When the device opens, it loads a blister pack for consumption each time you use inhaler device. Spacer must not be used while using Flovent. Do not swallow.Follow directions mentioned on prescription label that comes with Diskus.Wash your mouth thoroughly after suing Flovent products in order to prevent from yeast infection. Be attentive about your dental hygience while using Flovent as it is known to cause cavities or tooth discoloration.Generally, asthma is treated with combination of several medications.
