What is Pravachol?

Pravachol or pravastation belongs to a group of HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or “statins.”. the drug helps in reduction of high cholesterol level or triglycerides in the blood.The drug decreases amounts of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) while inducing amounts of “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL).Pravachol also used in the treatment of lessening heart strokes or other heart problems in patients suffering from diabetes and coronary heart diseases. Pravachol should not be taken by the adults lesser than 8 years old.Pravachol is used for some other health-related issues which may or may not be listed in this guide

Important information

Pravochol should not be taken if you are allergic to its ingredient named as pravastatin. The drug has to be avoided if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant or on breast-fed. Also pravochol is not to be used when you are suffering from any liver disorder. Before taking this medicine

  • Especially if you are taking:Tell your doctor about all other medications you use. Certain other drugs can increase your risk of serious muscle problems, and it is very important that your doctor knows if you are using any of them:
  • gemfibrozil (Lopid), fenofibrate (Antara, Fenoglide), fenofibric acid (Fibricor, Trilipix), or Lipofen, Tricor,Lofibra, Triglide);
  • drugs that contain niacin (Advicor, Niacor, Niaspan,Simcor, Slo-Niacin, and others); or
  • medicines that weaken your appetite, such as steroids, cancer medicine, or drugs used to avoid organ transplant rejection, includes cyclosporine (Gengraf, Sandimmune, Neoral,), sirolimus (Rapamune), or tacrolimus (Prograf).According to FDA pregnancy category X.
  • Pravachol can harm an the fetus and could injure the unborn baby. Avoid taking Pravachol if you are pregnant or conceived during the treatment. Use effective birth control measures while in the treatment of pravachol. Pravastatin may enters into the human milk and harm the baby. Avoid breast-feeding throughout the treatment of pravachol.

Pravachol side effects

Call your doctor if you feel ill after intake of Pravachol. This medication is known to cause some allergic reactions such as hives or skin rash, breathing difficulties and swelling in face, throat, lips and tongue.

Some serious side effects of pravochol are:

  • feeling like pass out;
  • memory problem
  • increased urination
  • swelling or weight gain
  • musle pain
  • nausea, diarrhea
  • increased thirst

Common side effects are:

  • Sleeplessness or imsomnia;
  • Tremors;
  • Dryness in mouth or upset stomach;
  • Headache or dizziness;
  • Appetite loss, weight loss
  • Bleeding in nose
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea, backpain or redness

What other drugs will affect Pravachol?

Provachol might interact with few drugs especially:Before taking Pravachol, tell your doctor about all other medicines you are using, especially:

  • cimetidine or Tagame);
  • spironolactone (Aldactazide, Aldactone,); or
  • any other “statin” drugs including atorvastatin (Caduet, Lipitor,), lovastatin (Altoprev, Mevacor), fluvastatin (Lescol), rosuvastatin (Crestor), or simvastatin (Simcor, Zocor, Vytorin).

This is not a comprehensive list and other drugs can also react to Pravachol. Inform about all your medications to your specialist. This includes prescribed and over-the-counter drugs, health or dietary supplements and Ayurvedic or herbal products.

What happens if I miss a dose?

In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. Avoid taking your dose if it is the time of your next intake or it is evening already. Do not consume extra medication for replenishing missed dose.

What should I avoid?

If you are taking other drugs such as colestipol (Colestid), or cholestyramine (Questran, Prevalite), schedule them. Do not take them within 1 hour or 4 hours earlier to pravachol.Avoid taking meals that are high in cholesterol or fat. Follow your diet plan as prescribed by your nutritionist otherwise your cholesterol level will not come in controlDo not drink alcohol during the treatment of pravachol as it could raise triglyceride levels and might upsurge the risk of liver damage.Grapefruit and its products might interact with pravachol. Discuss about their usage with your health care provider

How should I take Pravachol?

Follow doctor’s prescription and every direction mentioned on prescription label while using Pravachol. Do not increase or decrease the dosage on your own.Take the drug with or without meals and consume it on the same time every day. first my doc suggested me simvastatin,..the drug worked well but I suffered from leg pain..then he put me into pravastatin treatment and now I am facing loss of appetite and muscle pain…I left it… phewww..dnt know what other drug will work on me.

I used to take Lipitor to reduce my choles level..but it didn’t work..lots of side effects but I found pravastatin good an working on me well
