Tequin® (gatifloxacin)

What is Tequin?

Tequin is fluoroquinolone antibiotic that fights against bacterial infection in the body.

Tequin effectively treats several bacterial infections of lungs, sinuses, skin, and urinary tract. Tequin also effectively treats STDs.

Tequin has several other sues which are not mentioned above.

Important information

Diabetics must not take tequin.

You must provide your doctor with all your medical history like Long QT syndrome, cardiacarrhythmias,or medication history like intake of quinidine, disopyramid, bretylium, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol etc.

The above mentioned drugs must not be taken before 4 hours of taking tequin. There are several other medications which must not be combined with tequin like antacids, vitamin supplements, and mineral supplements containing aluminum, magnesium, or iron.

Certain other drugs may react with cloxacillin. You must always keep your doctor informed about all your medications. This includes OTC drugs, herbal products, vitamins and all prescriptions.

Tequin may cause symptomatic relief even before the infection inside the body completely subsides. You must not discontinue tequin before completing the medication course. Doing otherwise will cause recurrent infections resistant to antibiotic. Tequin is ineffective for viral infections such as flu or common cold.

Tequin predisposes your skin to sun burns so you must use proper clothing and as far as possible avoid exposure to sunlight and wear sun block skin lotion (SPF 15 or more) to protect your skin. You may develop signs of sun allergy like itching, redness, rashes, redness tec.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Tequin?

Diabetics must not take tequin.

You must provide your doctor with all your medical history like Long QT syndrome, cardiac arrhythmias,or medication history like intake of quinidine, disopyramid, bretylium, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol etc.

You must keep your doctor informed about:

  • a personal or family history of “Long QT syndrome”;
  • hypokalemia
  • cardiac disorder, arrhythmias
  • renal disorder
  • hepatic disorder
  • seizure disorder

Tequin use may be completely contraindicated in some of the above mentioned conditions or dosage adjustments may suffice. You may need to undergo certain special tets while taking tequin.

FDA pregnancy category C. tequin may harm the fetus. Keep your doctor informed about your pregnancy status while taking tequin.

Tequin excretion in breast milk and its adverse effects on the nursing baby are unknown. Nursing mothers must not take tequin without doctors advice.

Minimum age for the intake of tequin is 18 yrs.

People over 60 yrs, are prone to have more serious side effects of tequin, so the doctor may decide to prescribe lower dosage of tequin to them.

What are the possible side effects of Tequin generic?

Symptoms of Tequin generic allergy may be shortness of breath, hives swelling of face, throat, lips or tongue, fainting or rash.

If you experience any of the serious side effects of Tequin generic, you must stop intake of Tequin generic and seek medical help.

  • Tachycardia or cardiac arrhythmias
  • Fainting
  • Light headedness
  • Seizures
  • Sensory alterations like tingling, numbness
  • Red skin rash, blisters, peeing of skin
  • Watery or bloody diarrhea
  • Symptoms of liver disorder like icterus, itching, pale skin, dark urine, clay colored stools etc.
  • Sudden joint pain or swelling
  • Skin rash

Less serious side effects of Tequin generic may be:

  • mild diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomachache
  • dizziness, restlessness, confusion
  • insomnia
  • nightmares
  • headache
  • vaginal discharge, itching

You may experience other side effects not mentioned above. You must consult your doctor about potential side effects in your case.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss any dose you can take it when you remember but if it’s time for the next dose do not take double dose at single time. If you missed just one dose, continue to take the rest of the dosages at regular intervals.

What happens if I overdose?

Tequin generic overdose symptoms may be reduced activity, slowed breathing, vomiting, tremors or convulsions.

What should I avoid?

Tequin generic predisposes your skin to sun burns so you must use proper clothing and as far as possible avoid exposure to sunlight and wear sun block skin lotion (SPF 15 or more) to protect your skin. You may develop signs of UV allergy like itching, redness, rashes, redness tec.

Tequin generic may cause diarrhea but that may be due to some infection also. So you must consult your doctor if you have watery or bloody motions. Don’t take anti-diarrhea medication without doctors advice.

Tequin generic may hamper thinking and increase reaction time so you must drive after taking Tequin generic, you also must not involve in other activities which require high level of alertness, shortly after taking Tequin generic.

How should I take Tequin generic?

You must follow the prescription instructions and take the medicine as prescribed by your doctor. Do not alter the dosage or duration of medication without seeking medical advice.

Tequin generic tablets must be taken with 1 full glass of water. You must increase your fluid intake when taking Tequin generic. Tequin generic dosage must be taken at the same time everyday. Tequin generic may be taken empty stomach.

Store Tequin generic in a dry, dark place at room temperature.

For lung infection: effective and had no side effects. Only little weakness is felt.

For bacterial infection: gave good results except that I feel really weak.
