What is verapamil?

Verapamil is used for calcium channel blocker. It mechanism by comforting the strengths of your heart and blood vessels.Verapamil is also castoff to solve the problems of hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain)Verapamil has other uses as well but we not added in this medical guide.

Verapamial is strictly prohibited in the condition of “sick sinus syndrome” or “AV block”, major heart failure, slow heartbeats or any other heart disorder

According to FDA pregnancy category C, It is not recognized whether verapamil will damage an unborn baby. inform your doctor if you are expected or plan to get pregnant while on the medication. Verapamil can enter into human milk and may injure a neonate. Do not intake this medication without informing your doctor if you are breast-feeding a neonate.

Verapamil side effects

Rush to your doctor if you are facing signs of any allergy because of verapamil such as swelling on face, throat, tongue, lips, difficulty in breathing, hives etc Stop using verapamil and call your doctor at once if you have:Call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect while taking verapamil such as:

  • confusion,);
  • restless your eyes, jaw, tongue,or neck, tremor or shaking
  • hallucinations, seizures (convulsions
  • numbness, burning pain, or tingly feeling;
  • easy bruising,
  • skin rash, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness;
  • unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin;
  • urinating less than usual or not at all.

Few of serious verapamil side effects may be like loss of appetite, constipation, diarrehea, trouble in concentration, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, tasteless feeling, impotence etc.the list is not completed, there may be more side effects..consult your doctor to know more about the drug.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the drug immediately you recall it or if you find that there is a time for next dosage than avoid it as taking twice may not help you for anything.

What should I avoid?

Verapamil may damage your reaction on temporary basis so it is better to avoid driving.You may feel dizzy sometime so get up slowly and steady after taking verapamil. Avoid alcohol as well. verapamil may interact with grapefruit and its products, so it is highly recommended to avoid such things.

How should I take verapamil?

Always take the dosage of verapamil as prescribed by your heath care provider. Must to follow the instructions carefully as written on prescription label. Do not stop the medicine or change the dose without the recommendation of doctor.Never crush or chew the drug, swallow it with full glass of water May be a chance that you feel trouble in swallowing whole capsule, ask your health care provider to open the capsule and scatter the drug into the spoonful to swallow it easily. Without chewing the drug, swallow it immediately with water. Throw the empty capsule into the bin and please be careful, do not store the mixture for later use. Have it immediately.In the treatment of verapamil, blood pressure should be checked regularly. kidney and liver function tests may also be recommended by your doctor.If you are undergoing for any surgery, do inform your surgeon about the treatment of verapamil. Do not stop the drug on your own.
