What is Viramune generic (nevirapine)?

Nevirapine is an effective antiviral drug that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying in the body.

Nevirapine is popularly used to treat AIDS caused by HIV. Viramune generic does not act prophylactically neither can it cure HIV or AIDS.

Nevirapine may be used for several other conditions not mentioned above.

What is the most important information I should know about Viramune generic (nevirapine)?

Viramune generic must not be used by those who have moderate or severe liver disorder. This drug cannot be used prophylactically to prevent AIDS.

You would require to get regular blood tests done while getting treatment with Viramune generic. You must always stay under doctors supervision when taking Viramune generic.

Very severe or even fatal liver disorders may result from the usage of this medicine. If you experience symptoms of liver disorder like itching, icterus, upper stomach ache, nausea, loss of appetite, dark color urine, clay colored stools, you must stop intake of Viramune generic and immediately seek emergency medical help.

Nevirapine may result in severe or life-threatening skin reactions like skin pain, red or purple skin rash which spreads and leads to blistering and peeling of skin. Other symptoms of adverse effects of the drug may be swelling of face, lips, tongue, and sorethroat,burning of eyes, fever etc. You must immediately seek medical help on noticing these symptoms.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Viramune generic (nevirapine)?

Viramune generic must not be used by those who have moderate or severe liver disorder. This drug cannot be used prophylactically to prevent AIDS.

There are some drugs which cannot be used together with Viramune generic and you may need change of prescription. Some of these drugs are:

  • Efavirenz
  • atazanavir;
  • rifampin
  • itraconazole;
  • ketoconazole;
  • St. John’s wort.

To ensure safe usage of the drug, keep your doctor informed about any of these conditions:

  • skin disease
  • hepatic disease (like history of hepatitis or cirrhosis);
  • renal disease (or if you are on dialysis
  • ineffectiveness of delavirdine or efavirenz

FDA pregnancy category B. adverse effects on fetus are unknown. Viramune generic may lead to liver damage in pregnant woman. You must keep your doctor informed about your pregnancy status.

HIV may get transmitted from you to your baby so be very cautious in taking your medications. No carelessness can be tolerated during pregnancy.

Nevirapinereduces effectiveness of contraceptive pills, so you must seek advice use of non-hormonal methods of contraception like condoms and vaginal diaphragms.

HIV positive women must not breast feed the healthy born baby, as the infection may get transmitted to the healthy baby through breast milk.

Minimum age for the intake of Viramune generic is 6 years.

Viramune generic (nevirapine) side effects

Symptoms of nevirapine allergy may be shortness of breath, muscle weakness, severe numbness, tingling, hives, swelling of face, throat, lips or tongue, fainting or rash.

Less serious side effects may be:

  • Mild nausea and vomiting
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Stomach ache
  • Fatigue
  • Malaise
  • Headache
  • Body fat changes especially in arms, face, legs, neck, waist and breasts

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss any dose you can take it when you remember but if it’s time for the next dose do not take double dose at single time. If you missed just one dose, continue to take the rest of the dosages at regular intervals. After discontinuing the drug for over 7 days, when you restart the drug, first seek medical advice regarding the dosage, you may need to restart with low dose.

What should I avoid while taking Viramune generic (nevirapine)?

Alcohol increases the risk of liver damage, so it must not be used with Viramune generic. Viramune generic does not prevent transmission of HIV so you must not have unsafe sex;do not share your razors or toothbrush with others. Consult your doctor about safe ways of having sex.

How should I take Viramune generic (nevirapine)?

You must follow the prescription instructions and take the medicine as prescribed by your doctor. Do not alter the dosage or duration of medication without seeking medical advice.

Nevirapine is started with the low dose of once in a day for first 2 weeks, to avoid skin reactions, dosage may then be increased to twice a day. You just follow your doctors prescription regarding the dosage of drug.

After discontinuing the drug for over 7 days, when you restart the drug, first seek medical advice regarding the dosage, you may need to restart with low dose.

Nevirapine can be taken empty stomach or with milk or soft drinks.

Viramune generic extended-release tablet must not be crushed, chewed or broken but be swallowed right away.

Nevirapine oral suspension (liquid) must be shaken well before use and must be taken with food. You must measure the quantity of medicine with the proper device like dose measuring cup or spoon and not with the feeding spoon. If you don’t have the appropriate measuring device, you must buy one from the chemist shop.

To ensure the effectiveness of treatment you must get your blood analysis and liver function tests done regularly between 6th and 18th weeks of treatment. Regularly visit your consultant.

Nevirapine cannot be taken as the only drug for treating HIV/AIDS. You must always take it in combination with other HIV/AIDS medications to avoid developing resistance against nevirapine.
